When it comes to the Yum Brand triplets, only two of the three companies in the coalition are targeting the fast casual market right now. Taco Bell is creating an alternate cantina brand and KFC is spicing up the menu to match the interior redesigns, but Pizza Hut hasn’t announced too many major upgrades yet. There are some big changes coming soon, though. The world of pizza is finally transforming like the rest of the fast food industry, with consumers looking for higher quality ingredients and fresher, less processed menu items. Fast casual pizza is already emerging in major cities across the country.
It’s unclear how Pizza Hut will choose to embrace this trend. It could start a brand new chain with a different name and focus, or simply remodel and upgrade their existing locations. It’s also possible that they’ll simply acquire an existing smaller chain already producing craft pizzas. Yum partner Taco Bell went the new brand route with the U.S. Taco Co., while KFC is expanding their existing brand with extensions like Super Chix and the Banh Shop. It could help the chain stay competitive as the number of pizza chains explodes in the U.S. and abroad.
