Growing Concepts
Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).

Atlanta, GA-based TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFE (founded 1997) has increased by 45 units, from 325 to 370 (14% growth) and entered into CO, CT, ME, NJ, and UT.  This fast casual juice/smoothie concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner hours, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Locations have limited seating and offer catering, drive-thru and online ordering services.  All units are franchised and trade in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WV.

New York, NY-based FAY DA BAKERY (founded 1991) has increased by 1 unit, from 13 to 14 (8% growth).  This quick serve Asian bakery/cafe concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Units seat about 20.  Trading areas are CT, NY, and China.

SECOND CUP of Mississauga, ON has increased by 5 units, from 357 to 362 (1% growth).  These are quick serve coffee shops with seating for around 30.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$12+.  Locations are in AB, BC, MB, NB, NL, NS, ON, PQ and SK.

MAIN STREET VENTURES of Ann Arbor, MI has increased by 1 unit, from 15 to 16 (7% growth) adding a new concept called Revolution Grille.  These are family/casual restaurants with full bar and seating for around 250.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $10-$30+.  Other company concepts are Blue Pointe Oyster Bar (1), Carson’s American Bistro (1), Ciao (1), Eo Burgers (1), Gratzi (1), Palio (1), Real Seafood Company (3), The Chop House (4), Tidewater Grill (1) and Zia’s (1).  Locations are in FL, MD, MI, OH and WV.

Inver Grove Heights, MN-based ROCCO’S PIZZA (founded 1988) has increased by 1 unit, from 7 to 8 (14% growth).  The restaurants are quick serve, open for dinner only.  Per person price range is $4-$12+.  Units seat about 50 and offer catering, delivery and online ordering services.  All locations are franchised and trade in MN.

Dallas, TX-based 8.0 MANAGEMENT has increased by 1 unit for the Flying Saucer concept, from 15 to 16 (7% concept growth).  Other company concepts include Flying Fish (8) and Meddlesome Moth (1).  Overall company increase was from 24 to 25 (4% growth).  The concepts are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner hours.  Cuisine is mostly American, with a $6-$15+ per person check average.  The restaurants have full bar service and seating for around 200.  Trading areas are AR, MO, NC, SC, TN, and TX.

Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts
Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.

Nashville, TN-based JHS HOLDINGS (founded 1987) has increased from 5 to 8 (60% growth) with the addition of 3 new concepts called Etch (1), Sombra Mexican Kitchen (1), and Anjou Restaurant (1).  Other company concepts are Amerigo (4) and Char Restaurant (1).  The restaurants are mostly family/casual, open for lunch and dinner.  Concepts serve multiple types of cuisines, with a per person check average of $10-$30+.  Catering and banquet facilities are available.  The restaurants are located in MS and TN.

DINING OUT ENTERPRISES based in Elgin, IL has increased by 2 units, from 6 to 8 (33% growth) adding two new concepts, Black Cow Kitchen & Bar and Rancheros Mexican Grille.  Other company concepts are Andrew’s Open Pit & Spirits (1), Jimmy’s Charhouse (2), Johnny’s Kitchen & Tap (1), La Tasca Tapas (1), and Maxwell’s Hot Dogs (1).  These are mostly family/casual restaurants with full bar and seating for around 350.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $8-$20.  Catering and banquet services are offered.  All locations are in IL.

Houston, TX-based SALATA (founded 2005) has increased by 6 units, from 13 to 19 (46% growth).  This is a fast casual salad concept, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $4-$12+, with seating for about 50.  Catering, delivery and online ordering services are offered.  The stores are franchised and trade in CA and TX.

Louisville, KY-based SENOR IGUANA’S (founded 2007) has increased by 1 unit, from 4 to 5 (25% growth).  This family/casual Mexican concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20+ per person check average.  The restaurants have full bar service and average seating for about 200.  Catering and banquet facilities are available.  Trading areas are IN and KY.  We featured this concept on 2/5/13 (33% growth).

Edgewater, MD-based THE GREENE TURTLE (founded 1976) has increased by 2 units, from 37 to 39 (5% growth) and entered into NY.  The restaurants are family/casual, serving American cuisine.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner, with a $8-20+ per person check average.  Locations have full bar and average seating for about 250.  Catering and banquet options are available.  About half of locations are franchised.  Trading areas are DC, DE, MD, NY, and VA.  We last wrote about this concept on 5/1/12 (14% growth).

Miamisburg, OH-based FRICKER’S (founded 1985) has increased by 1 unit, from 22 to 23 (5% growth).  The restaurants are family/casual, specializing in chicken.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner, with a $6-$15+ per person check average.  Seating is for about 125, with full bar service.  Catering and private party facilities are available.  About 30% of locations are franchised.  Trading areas are IN, MI, and OH.  We last featured this concept on 2/12/13.
