Joe Aurelio of Aurelio’s Pizza Receives First Ever Golden Dum Dums Award from Dum Dums Maker Spangler Candy

Partners since 1959, Aurelio’s Pizza and Dum Dums have something in common, they are both family-owned, well-loved brands and in recognition of their longstanding partnership, Spangler Candy recently presented Joe Aurelio with the first ever Golden Dum Dums Award.

Aurelio’s Pizza gives away over 1 million Dum Dums suckers chain wide each year, a tradition that began at Aurelio’s on its very first day in business back in 1959. Joseph A. Aurelio Jr., founder of Aurelio’s Pizza, believed that customer should receive a little treat after their meal, and found the Dum Dums sucker, in all its varieties, to be perfect.

In fact, five generations of Aurelio’s Pizza customers have come to love and expect their Dum Dums. Aurelio’s wait staff reports customers from 2 to 92 often argue over who gets what flavor.

“Dum Dums are an important part of our tradition and brand experience at Aurelio’s,” said Joe Aurelio, president of Aurelio’s. “When we bring the check — which usually comes with leftovers because customers want that next day Aurelio’s meal — we deliver both with a variety of Dum Dums sucker flavors. My personal favorite … cream soda.”

Joe Aurelio of Aurelio's Pizza Receives First Ever Golden Dum Dums Award from Dum Dums Maker Spangler CandyWith a history as rich and entrenched in the community as the pizza it’s famous for, the very first Aurelio’s restaurant opened on Ridge Road in Homewood, IL as the pride and joy of Joseph A. Aurelio, Jr. who decided to give it a go as a restaurateur at the age of 26. With its legendary “old oven” dating back to 1959 in its Homewood location, Aurelio’s was a pioneer in the concept of the Family Pizzeria in the United States and helped to launch pizza into the American lexicon. Since that time, Aurelio’s has become one of Chicagoland’s claims to fame. And, transplanted Chicagoans all over the map have helped to bring their favorite pizzeria franchise to 41 cities across six states, growing a strong fan base for the taste of Aurelio’s.
