In 2003, Mike Wilson and his fellow employees of the Loveshack restaurant in West Lafayette, Indiana made history after they served the largest calzone ever at nearly 70 pounds. The Italian baked treat measured 9 feet and 4 inches long, and was approximately 22 inches wide setting a new Guinness World Record. “When we established that record it was mostly a way for us to demonstrate what a calzone actually is because a lot of people in the MidWest may not be sure quite what it is or how it differentiates from a Stromboli,” explained Mike Wilson, Founder of Loveshack and current Guiness World Record holder.
On Saturday, August 9th history will be tested. Middlebury, Indiana based Rulli’s Italian Restaurant will attempt to break Wilson’s 11-year-standing record as they play host to a fundraising event for the Boys and Girls Club of Middlebury and serve a massive calzone to those that attend the event. “We have already applied for the record and our record attempt has been accepted,” explained Sam Rulli, Owner of Rulli’s Italian Restaurant. “The whole event will be filmed start to finish and sent to Guinness World Records so that they can ensure we have complied with all terms. There will also be an industry professional on-site to supervise and make sure we are meeting all criterions.”
Consisting of 80 to 100 pounds of pizza dough, 5 gallons of pizza sauce, 25 pounds of pepperoni, and 30 pounds of cheese; the finished product should weigh between 140 to 160 pounds establishing Rulli’s Italian Restaurant as the new world record holder.
Tickets to the event will be sold for $5.00 at the Rulli’s Elkhart and Middlebury locations, and will also be available for purchase at the Boys and Girls Club in Middlebury. The extraordinary event will be held at 851 U.S. 20 in Middlebury, Indiana and all proceeds will be donated to the local Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury. “We will begin creating the calzone under large tents at our outdoor patio and cooking it in Middleby Marshall WOW oven provided by Middleby Marshall,” commented Rulli. “We will have indoor and outdoor seating available to all the attendees.”
Rulli’s will begin baking the oversized calzone at 11am on Saturday, and will be able to serve guests at approximately 12:15pm making the event an unforgettable community experience. Located inside Rulli’s Middlebury location, the Bella Luna Sports Bar and also Northern Indiana’s favorite place to watch sporting events, will also be open for refreshments.
