How to Stick to Your 2014 Goals

On January 1st, you were full of enthusiasm. You had a list of goals for your bar or restaurant and you were excited to put them into action! This was going to be the best year ever for your business.

Now that we’re fully into 2014 and reality has set in, how are you doing on those goals? If you’re like most people, you may have lost a little steam. You might be dragging  behind schedule, or maybe you’ve even given up entirely. You might not even be sure where to start!

Don’t feel bad…sticking to your 2014 goals is tough. But that doesn’t mean you have to become yet another person who gives up on his or her goals. Keep reading for a few tips you can keep in mind to help you stick to your goals in 2014.

Be specific.

First, make sure your goals are actually achievable. A vague goal like, “Increase sales” isn’t very helpful. How will you even know it you’ve achieved it? It’s harder to stick to goals if you’re not sure what you should be doing. A specific goal, like “Increase sales by 30%,” will be easier to stick to because you know exactly what you’re working towards.

Write it down.

Physically writing your goals down makes them much more likely to stick. If they’re written down, you can’t conveniently forget about them.

Track your progress.

One way to keep your motivation up is by keeping track of how you’re doing. Pay attention to your sales so you’ll know if you’re on track for a successful year.

Talk about it.

It can be hard to stay motivated if you’re keeping your goals all to yourself. It’s a good idea to have a mentor or another business owner to share your trials and triumphs with.

Get your team involved.

You don’t have to work toward your goals by yourself—everyone in your bar or restaurant should be working towards them, too! Make sure everyone on your staff knows about your goals. Not only is it more fun to work together as a team, but you’re much less likely to give up if you’ve involved everyone in your business.

Set a reward.

Going back to the example about sales, what incentive do you have to reach that goal? Yes, of course, you’ll have the extra money from more sales, but what else? A reward can be incredibly motivating when it comes to your goals. Perhaps you could promise to throw a party for your staff if they can meet your sales goals. This will give everyone something to look forward to and a reason to keep working hard.

Realize that you don’t have to be perfect.

Have you ever heard the quote “Perfection is the enemy of good”? Sometimes in your quest to reach all your goals, you might lose sight of your real purpose. Sure, you may not reach your goal of increasing sales by 30%. But if you increase sales by 20%, that’s still pretty great. Some improvement is definitely better than none!

It isn’t always easy to stick to your goals, but by keeping these tips in mind, you can make your 2014 goals a reality.
